In September 2015, UN Member States adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. Southern African Development Community (SADC) governments joined the rest of the world in adopting these goals. A few months later, SADC Gender Ministers agreed to review the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development (the Protocol) in line with the SDGs, the Beijing Plus Twenty Review and Africa Agenda 2063 at their annual meeting in 2014.

The SDGs are especially important because they include 17 goals and 169 targets as well as 230 indicators 53 of which relate to gender. Goal five on gender equality has 14 indicators. This month of September as we commemorate the second anniversary of the adoption of the SDGs our focus will be on the progress being made by SADC governments to achieve the gender equality related targets of the #Globalgoals.

For more on the implementation of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development read the Implementation chapter here.
