This workshop, commissioned by the Farm Community Trust of Zimbabwe, assisted the FCTZ to develop a communications and advocacy strategy and action plan. This report describes the workshop process and the action plan.
The Farm Community Trust of Zimbabwe (FCTZ) is a local NGO established in 1997 to respond to the social development needs of workers and their families on the large scale commercial farms through out Zimbabwe. The farmworker community is one of the most marginalised in Zimbabwean society. Although commercial agriculture contributes to 40 percent of GDP, farm workers are among the least paid in the country. Approximately 25 percent of the farmworker communities originate from outside Zimbabwe. They move from farm to farm and the majority of farmworkers do not have appropriate civic documentation. The farmworker community is characterised by lack of organisation and insecurity.
