Gender Links and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) held a Gender and Media (GEM) Summit from the 12-15 September 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Gender Links is a Southern African NGO that promotes gender equality in and through the media, MISA seeks to foster a free, independent and diverse media in the region. The GEM Summit emerged from the landmark Gender and Media Baseline Study (GMBS) of 2003. The GMBS covered 12 Southern African countries and analysed a staggering 25 110 news items.

The Gender and Media Summit, hosted by MISA and Gender Links, brought together participants from 13 Southern African countries including Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In addition the Summit attracted participants from Uganda, Kenya, UK, New Zealand, Netherlands and India. The theme of the Summit was “Making every voice count”.

For two and half days 184 delegates from different parts of the globe discussed and debated critical issues relating to gender and the media. Click here for the awards.
