Gender Links (GL) the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), and the Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network will be holding the second Gender and Media (GEM) Summit from 7-8 September 2006 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The theme of the summit is Media Diversity and Sustainability: Good for business, good for democracy.
Who
Gender Links is a Southern African NGO that promotes gender equality in and through the media. The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) is the region’s foremost promoter of freedom of expression. GEMSA is an umbrella organisation of individuals and institutions whose motto is: “making every voice count and counting that it does.” GEMSA has its roots in the historic Southern African Gender and Media Summit attended by 184 participants from around the region in September 2004. Since its inception GEMSA has signed up 330 individual and 13 institutional members from 13 countries. GL and MISA are founding members of GEMSA.
Why
The second GEM Summit will:
– Take stock of progress made since the first Gender and Media Summit, as reflected in the recent Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) and related research.
– Affirm the progress that has been made through the holding of the second Gender and Media Awards that are expected to attract entries from across the region in the print, TV and radio categories on the evening of 8 September
– Share best practices from the region and globally.
When
The GEMSA General Meeting will be held on the afternoon of 6 September 2006. The Second GEM Summit will be held from 7-8 September 2006. The GEMSA Committee meeting will take place on 9 September. These dates have been chosen to enable participants wanting to go on to Highway Africa at Rhodes University starting on 11 September to be able to do so.
