Welcome to the Diversity Exchange newsletter, a product of the Gender and Media Diversity Centre. Gender Links, MISA and GEMSA are extending the deadline for submission of the Gender and Media awards, Media, Diversity and Change, Taking Stock, 2010 to 3 SEPTEMBER 2010 following the overwhelming response from some countries and a slower response from others. The deadline has been extended in the interest of fairness and to ensure there is equitable regional representation in all categories. The awards include a cash prize and attendance at the summit. The Womens Radio Fund was founded in 2000 by Dorothy Abbott who is a multimedia producer and cultural activist, specialising in radio and print media with an emphasis on social justice and women’s culture. The mission of the Womens Radio Fund Mission is to build a support network for women radio producers and broadcasters worldwide. Read more…
On August 12th, 2010, Gender Links and the University of Botswana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The aim of the MOU is to develop strategic partnerships for the regular exchange of gender, media and diversity information. In pursuit of this common purpose, the parties agree to explore cooperation opportunities for collection, connecting, collaboration and dissemination of information and knowledge products. Read more…

It is clear that to make lasting change in equitable gender representation in and through the media, it is not enough to look solely at education, audiences, or media personnel. One needs to look at all aspects of gender in and through the media, and bring together these different spheres to work on sustainable change. To accomplish this, Gender Links will host verification and advocacy workshops in 14 SADC countries to assess and follow up on the GIME and GMPS research. These workshops will analyse the findings of both the GIME and GMPS and plan ways forward. Read more…

The Gender and Education Association is hosting the 8th International Gender and Education Conference, held at Exeter University from 27 to -30 April 2011.
The theme for the 2011 conference is Gender and Education: Past, Present and Future. A theme that was inspired by a special edition of the journal Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, published in 2008. In this special edition the guest editors sought to trace the changes that have occurred in the field of gender and education in recent years, to discuss the explosion of interest that has arisen.

In his column in Sowetan on July 27 2010 (Research on HIV prevention gel put black lives at risk), Andile Mngixitama viciously attacks South African researchers who recently announced a huge breakthrough in the development of a microbicide, a gel that they hope women will be able to use to reduce the risk of their being infected with HIV from sex. Under the guise of black consciousness he distorts facts, takes an opinion on something he knows little about and makes statements that will cause life-threatening confusion. Read more…
Thenjiwe Mtintso , ambassador to Italy and a member of the ANCs national executive committee, has lashed out at leading figures in the ANC who have made statements that may be perceived as sexist. Some ANC members and even leading figures have been fingered in gender based violence. The zero tolerance the ANC shows against any racism or racial connotations has not, in recent years, been as strong when it comes to sexism, she wrote in the partys online letter ANC Today. Given the centrality of communication to society, who owns the media, who gets to speak on behalf of whom, and to what end are critical issues. The regression of mainstream media from watchdogs of democracies to business ventures resulting in Habermasian refeudalisation of the public sphere is worrying. Community media re-engage communities on the periphery, opening possibilities for social change. The dominance of mainstream players in media governance, complicated by sustainability concerns of grassroots enterprises, result in legislation that impedes the potentiality of community media access and participation, as mapped in this paper with the case of community radio struggle in India. Both climate change itself and related policies are likely to have wide-ranging effects on gender relations, especially in developing countries. Poor women face many gender specific barriers that limit their ability to cope with and adapt to a changing climate; these must be removed in the interests of both gender equity and adaptation efficiency. The article is about man who fathered a child by his daughter. The daughter reported the assaults to the police in 2008. The 48 year old was found guilty of repeatedly raping his daughter now 21 years, between 2004 and 2006 while she was living with him in Alexandra, Johannesburg. The court accepted that the daughter was raped well into 2006, her child was born November 2005 which the DNA match that of the father. Read more…
A veteran Iranian human rights activist has warned that Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani , a mother of two, could be stoned to death at any moment under the terms of a death sentence handed down by Iranian authorities. Only an international campaign designed to pressure the regime in Tehran can save her life, according to Mina Ahadi, Head of the International Committee Against Stoning and the death Penalty. This working paper is based on the proceedings of an international four-day dialogue entitled Building Alliances Globally to End Violence Against Women convened by Creating Resources for Empowerment in Action (CREA), held at the Bellagio Study and Conference Centre, Italy in July 2004. CREA convened this dialogue on issues of violence against women to bring together activists, from around the world, who have based their work on the understanding that women can be victims, survivors and perpetrators of violence and have used innovative strategies to deal with prevention and service. The documentation and exposure of these media freedom alerts help turn the spotlights from around the world squarely on those responsible for human rights violations and this can make a significant difference as those who violate human rights often rely on the cover of darkness. My internship with GL was quite an empowering and enlightening one. I got opportunity to improve my people skills and a feel of what working under pressure means. The experiences strengthened my personality and gave me new perspective. I got to better understand and appreciate social problems than I had done previously especially in the areas of gender inequality and violence against women. I began to feel that through my work within the Justice programme I could make a significant contribution towards social injustices that rake our communities on a daily basis. Read more…
The Institute for Advancement of Journalism is offering new courses from September 15 – October 7, 2010. These courses are geared towards journalists and incorporate new media, feature writing and social networking tools.
The Institute for Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) was set up in 1992 to help improve journalism just as South Africa entered a new democratic era. They place special emphasis on interactive learning. Read more…
