Trainer’s notes

This article shows how the media is event driven. Gender often is a news item when reporters cover workshops and seminars. Very few gender stories emanate from a coverage of trends and processes which require an investigative analysis of issues.

The story is based on an event, it is weak in a gender analysis for the following reasons:
  • The angle of the story is the workshop;

  • The only source in the story is the International Labour Organisation (ILO) (office and an official);

  • The link between gender equality in the work place and poverty is not well developed; and

  • The story does not explore the gender relations between women and men in the workplace

Exercise one: Read the case study and discuss:

  1. How this story could be told from a different angle?

  2. What angle would you develop?

  3. Who would you interview?

  4. How would you develop your angle from a gender perspective?
