This article is a profile of the African woman food farmer of the year. A potentially inspirational story about how one woman has transformed her small holding, the article is marred by frequent references to how Kaunde has achieved all this without wishing to challenge gender norms in Malawian society.

This article may be used in training to:
·         Demonstrate how subtle gender stereotypes and perspectives often affect reporting.
·         The difference between practical and strategic gender needs.

Trainer’s notes
Ask participants to pick out examples of subtle stereotypes, which also reflect the extent to which media in the region tends to be more comfortable with women fulfilling practical, rather than strategic gender needs:
  • The “gender hullabaloo.”
  • “Instead of preaching and getting involved in theoretical gender equality struggle she is a hard working woman…”
  • Leaves most men “grinning with delight”
  • “I am now a happy and free woman, not that I have been fighting to be equal to men but because of my hard work.”
  • Urging other women to “wake up and work hard”.

Also discussed the images that are used. Despite Kaunde’s scientific innovations on her small holding, she is depicted in docile mode.
