Key points

  • Citizens scored their government an overall 55% of where they need to be by 2015 in terms of meeting the targets related to gender violence. This is a one percentage point decrease from a score of 56% in 2012.
  • Forty percent of female population suffered from one or more of the GBSV while only 30% of male population indicated to have suffered the same GBSV.
  • Twenty-seven percent of female have experienced marital rape and while only six percent of male have experienced the same.
  • Twelve percent of female have experienced early or forced marriage while only four percent of male have experienced the same.
  • There is key legislation in place to combat gender-based violence (GBV), including domestic violence and sexual harassment.
  • The GBV response is at all levels in society; men are also becoming involved.
  • The National Response to Combat GBV strategy (2008-2013) provides the framework for an integrated approach to ending GBV.
  • The main challenges are lack of resources with few trained personnel to deal with GBV.
  • There is a lack of shelters for survivors.
  • An Anti-trafficking Bill is in the making to address human trafficking.
