Joyce Banda became the first female president of Malawi and first female president in Southern Africa in April 2012. Her rise to presidency has been a major boost for gender activists, not only in the country, but also in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. She assumed the position of the chair of the regional bloc in August 2013.

Malawi has signed and ratified the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. The SADC Gender Protocol (SGP) came into force in September 2012. It is now a legally binding document and states are required to domesticate its provisions.
