Key points

  • Mauritius is not a signatory to the SADC Gender Protocol, but the Constitution guarantees equality before the law and prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender.
  • Women and men gave scored the government 72% and 76% respectively using the Citizen Score Card (CSC) that gauges citizen perceptions of progress made thus far. There is no SGDI score for this sector.
  • The 2011 Local Government Act, which stipulates that at least one-third of the candidates in local elections must be women and one-third men led to the amendment of the Constitution.
  • The 2012 Criminal Code Amendment Bill allows for the termination of pregnancy in special circumstances.
  • Mauritius has signed the United Nations (UN) Resolution on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Equality.
