This report covers the first Mauritian Gender Justice and Local Government Summit and awards that brought together over 150 guests and participants at Gold Crest Hotel in Quatre Bornes on 6, 7 and 21st March 2012.
Under the banner “365 days of local action to end violence and empower women” the summit and awards brought together over 110 persons including journalists, local government authorities, municipalities, representatives of Ministries of Gender,
Child Development and Family Protection, Ministry of Environment, Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands, the UNDP, the Prison, the National AIDS Secretariat and a wide range of NGOs. The summit focused on two key targets of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Development: achieving 50% women in all areas of decision making and halving the current levels of gender based violence (GBV), by 2015.
