More women are now going for HIV testing to know their status and this has empowered them

Trainers notes:
The article offers a broad and progressive gender perspective on women and HIV testing, including the importance of partners getting tested together.  The story explores the myths that surrounded HIV like doom, the disease being associated with homosexuals and how this has changed over the years. T It is a professionally sound story that includes use of data (statistics), consults a variety of sources (both rural and urban women) as well as three officials from three different institutions that deal with HIV testing and counseling. It also quotes an “ordinary person” Tendai Pareva.

The story could have been enriched by comparing how women have fared compared to their male counterparts other than 48% females mentioned at the New Start Centres – e.g. in terms of attitude.

Training exercises
Identify the strengths of the article.  What are the weaknesses – e.g. explicit reference to men and their attitude to HIV testing.   What other issues can be explored around HIV testing? One possibility would be to ask participants to volunteer to go for testing and write about their personal experiences.
