CSW59: Malawi Government opens its doors to civil society to advance gender equality

New York, 12 March: The Malawi government delegation is the attending the ongoing 59th session of the Commission on the Status on Women (CSW59) in New York, and has committed to join hands with Southern African countries to strengthen and renew the SADC Gender Protocol (SGP), which expires this year. The current SGP is aligned to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which also expire in September. The review of the SGP provides an opportunity to strengthen the regional instrument in line with the global MDG review process and appointment of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)…. CSW59: Young women crucial for gender equality fight

New York, 12 March: For the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, it seems as though the United Nations has heeded the call, “Nothing about us without us.” For the first time in its history, this year’s session has recorded the highest number of youth participating at the meeting and a record 8600 civil society activists have signed up to attend this year’s CSW… Read more

Read more

CSW59: Day 3- Moving the agenda forward for women and girls by Jean-Max Appanah

I was meant to attend the side event on the “Sharia as a Source of Women’s Rights” on the 8th Floor of the United Nations Church Centre. I got to the right building and went straight through the door into the first room which was on my left. I managed to find my way to a vacant seat in the crowded room. Soon I realised that I was in the wrong venue as the theme for discussion was “Moving forward the Agenda for girls.” Not attending my planned side event turned out to a blessing in disguise… Read more
