Over 300 delegates from around the Southern African Development Community (SADC) converged in Johannesburg April 22-24 for the largest ever gathering of activists, government and media to make a concerted push for gender equality.
Eighty-one of the participants travelled outside their country for the first time to participate in the SADC Gender Protocol@Work regional summit following 12 national summits involving 1,484 participants, 69% women and 31% men. In the opening cermony the hundreds of delegates chanted the slogan “2015, yes we must!À in unison referring to the deadline for achieving the 28 SADC gender protocol targets for gender parity in all areas – political, social and economic.
