The prevalence of GBV in Southern Africa is very high. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that one out every three women experience GBV at some point in their lives. GBV both reflects and reinforces the inequalities between women and men and often compromises the dignity of the affected. The media has a critical role to play in awareness raising, reducing the levels and impact of GBV by covering stories that focus on prevention, support and other integrated approaches thus ensuring that people who experience violence receive effective care and support. However, more often than not the media is part of the problem rather than of the solution.
