  • There are 22 daily newspapers in South Africa.
  • South Africa is ranked third in the region at an SGDI score of 81%, and a CSC score of 82% placing the country in first position in the region.
  • Media freedom is threatened in South Africa through the Information Bill
  • Whilst Press Freedom remains a critical issue in South Africa, its gendered dimension has remained on the periphery of the discourse.
  • Institutions of higher learning are working to mainstream gender in their teaching curriculum
  • Students from these higher learning institutions acknowledge the role of gender and media literacy to improve their knowledge on gender.
  • There are 15 community radio stations working with Gender Links as part of the Centres of Excellence (COE) for gender in the media project.
  • Women make up 28% of news sources in community media higher than the 20% in mainstream media as measured in the 2010 Gender and Media Progress Study (GMPS).
  • The Print and Digital Media Transformation Task Team (PDMTTT) has integrated gender in its recommendations on the transformation of the print and digital media in South Africa.
