Sex workers urged to get organized, The Namibian

Date: January 1, 1970

The article reports on comments made by the coordinator of a national women?s organization that sex workers should join women?s organizations or organize themselves in order to receive regular health checks to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Trainer’s Notes: The article is a single source story, relying on comments made by the coordinator. The failure to obtain comment from a sex worker is a serious omission. The article fails to provide any background concerning sex work and the spread of HIV and is subtly stigmatizing of sex workers, implying that they carelessly spread HIV.  Language is also stigmatizing, referring to sex workers interchangeably as prostitutes.
Training Exercises: Trainees should rewrite the article to include comments from sex workers (issues can include the reasons why women engage in sex work, dangers for women, including HIV, harassment of sex workers by clients and police officers).
