Sharp rise in HIV, AIDS stats, The Swazi Observer

Date: January 1, 1970
  • SHARE:

The article reports the national serosurveillance report, indicating the Swaziland has the highest prevalence of HIV in the world.

The article can be used to:
1. Raise discussion on the gender aspects of HIV/AIDS.
2. Raise discussion about the responsibility of the media in covering HIV and AIDS.
3. Demonstrate how reports and research can be better communicated throught the media.

Trainer’s Notes:  The article represents an important missed opportunity to explore gender in HIV coverage.  The article indicates that women are the worst affected by the epidemic and alludes to a number of  key gender issues (including the provision of home based care,  pregnant women with HIV, and the vulnerability of young women and girls) but fails to investigate any of these or the impact of the epidemic on women. Although the article is a news report, providing some context to the statistics.
would have strenghthened the article.

Discussion Questions
1. What factors contribute to the rising HIV rates amongst women?
2. What is the responsibility of the media in covering HIV and AIDS?

Training exercises:
1. Trainees should identify the gender issues raised by the article. They should then make a list of sources and data that they can use to rewrite the article to include these aspects.
2. Based on a recent research report, write an article that combines this data with personal perspectives.
