The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Development adopted in August 2008 harmonises existing international and regional instruments for achieving gender equality and sets 23 targets for doing so. Six of these targets concern Gender Based Violence (GBV). The provisions strengthen the Addendum to the SADC Declaration on Gender and Development for the Eradication of Violence Against Women and Children signed in 1998. The overall target is to reduce current levels of GBV by half by 2015.
