Tanzania to benefit from UN anti-AIDS scheme, The Daily News

Date: January 1, 1970
  • SHARE:

The article concerns the launch of the UNICEF campaign on children in Tanzania.

This article can be used to:
1. Raise discussion about the responsibility of the media in covering children and HIV and AIDS.
2. Raise discussion on the gender aspects of HIV/AIDS amongst young people.
3. Demonstrate diversity of voices.

Trainer’s Notes:
The article does not quote any sources.  Although the article attempts to identify the key issues for children, these are not properly explored and there is no gender analysis.  Children are referred to generally and not distinguished by gender.     The article does not attempt to contextualise the campaign within the context of HIV in Tanzania.
Discussion Questions:
1. What are the ethical implications of interviewing children in general and those living with HIV/AIDS.
2. How can journalists include the voices of children in media?

Training exercises:
1. Make a list of other sources to be interviewed, including health care workers, home based care givers, teachers and children in child headed households.  An interesting angle would be to interview men to ascertain their views on how to protect children from the epidemic and what role men should play.
