Findings of the Lesotho Violence Against Women Baseline Study
Eighty six percent of women in Lesotho have experienced gender based violence (GBV) while 41% of men admit to perpetrating GBV in their lifetime. The most prevalent form of GBV is intimate partner violence (IPV). However women underreport their experiences of violence. Only three percent and two percent of ever partnered women reported to the police and medical health providers, respectively, in the 12 months preceding the interview. One percent of women who were raped by non-partners reported to the police and medical health providers. This implies that violence continues to be a private matter. There are social and institutional factors which are hindering women from reporting violence which need to be explored.
