This Advert may be used to: 1. Show how a gender aware advert can be successful in attracting women and men.
2. Demontsrate pro-active measures to attract women to higher education.
Trainer’s notes
The advertisement for degree courses targets both men and women. The image consists of three young
people who look happy that they have taken the decision to go on with their academic studies.They are from different ethnic backgrounds: an Indian-looking man, a Chinese-looking woman and a Creole looking woman. In the Mirror on the Media advertising research conducted by GL both female and male focus groups commented that the advertisement carries a:
• Strong message of gender equality.
• Positive message for the youth.
• Positive message on ethnic diversity.
Some questions could be asked as to why the male image is forgrounded and larger than the photos of the women.
Discussion Questions
1. Give at least three reasons why this advert may be regarded as gender aware.
2. Give three examples of what can be done to further improve this advert to challenge existing stereotypes.
Training Exercises
1. Review advertisements in local newspapers/ magazines for colleges and training institutes – do they target both men and women for various professions? Are there patterns in which sex certain training institutes are trying to attract?
