Description
This book, an outcome of GL’s partnership with the City of Johannesburg in the Gender, Communications and Local Government capacity building initiative, is a rare first hand account of the experiences of men and women in local government and its gendered dimensions.
“The ‘I’ stories. City of Johannesburg Councillors Speak Out” is part of a broader project on gender, communication and local government undertaken in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and Gender Links. The aim of the project is to enhance the gender analysis and communication skills of leaders at local government level.
The 25 profiles contained in this publication represent the experiences of local government councillors, whose work for the most part goes unrecognised. Some of the local government councillors who contributed to the publication have been as one puts it “serving their community” for over 20 years. While the experiences shared by the councillors are sometimes painful and sad, they are also celebratory. Each profile celebrates the tenacity and determination of the people who serve their communities.
