Brief Council Description

Makoni Rural District covers an area of 8200 square kilometers with a total population of 244 000.  It has 5 constituencies divided into 39 wards headed by 5 traditional chiefs. It is the entry point from Mashonaland East Province to Manicaland Province.  Makoni district benefits economically from mining, agriculture (tobacco and livestock) and tourism. Makoni is a spoke council in the Hub and Spoke programme for gender mainstreaming having anchored the programme in 2020. Currently, the council is working towards achieving Local Economic Development through the Promoting Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development in Zimbabweprogramme. Focus is on using the horticultural value chain to boost the local economy. The initiative implemented in partnership with Gender Links aims to economically empower women, youths and men.
