Brief Council Description
Murewa Rural District Council in Zimbabwe is situated 75 kilometres northeast of the capital of Harare, on the road to Tete (Mozambique). Murewa District has a higher population of women than men recorded as 52% women during the 2022 census. According to statistics as well, a desirable number of men are employed than women, whilst most women are also breadwinners of their families regardless of not doing paid work. The council is a hub council for Mashonaland East province rural councils in the Hub and Spoke programme for gender mainstreaming in Zimbabwe. It has improved its gender mainstreaming initiatives by adopting a gender policy. Murewa RDC is also part of the Sunrise Campaign. 19 beneficiaries of the programme have benefitted from the Sunrise business revival programme. The Council is participating in the Gender Links’ Promoting Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development in Zimbabwe programme. It has partnered with women in recycling projects. This came after the realization that women can be good environment managers if given all the support they need to do their business. The project has also proved to be sustainable because waste is easily accessible at little or no cost at all and waste will always be available. The project will contribute to solid waste management in the district. |
