Since conducting extensive research on women’s political participation in the ground breaking research study Ringing up the Changes, Gender and Governance in Southern Africa, followed by At the Coalface, Gender and Local Government, GL has been collecting profiles on how women in politics make a difference. The data base adds to the growing evidence that women’s political participation leads to more responsive governance. The on-going “beyond numbers” collection is unique in that the majority of the profiles concern women in local government who are finding their voice and making a difference through the Centres of Excellence for Gender in Local Government project. GL has a partnership with I Know Politics http://www.iknowpolitics.org/ – the international knowledge network of Women in Politics – to link women in the region to this global network. The Southern Africa profiles are now available in a data base that can be searched by country, name, theme and date. Click here to search the database and tick the category Women in Politics.
