Every August in South Africa we celebrate women for an entire month. It is a time to look back to our history and look forward to where, as a country, we want to go. It has been 54 years since 1956, when thousands of women marched on the Union Buildings Pretoria in protest of the apartheid regime’s extension of passes that limited their freedom of movement.

This month, Gender Links will organise events and support others in South Africa as they embrace the women of this proud nation. Gender Links, The Ministry of Women, Children and People with Disabilities and various other Provincial Government departments have put together several key events over the month of August. (Download the activities calendar). We hope you will join us in commemoration of this important part of South Africa’s history and in celebration of the women of South Africa today.

The Gender Links Opinion and Commentary Service will be producing a series of topical articles during Women’s Month. The Service provides mainstream media with fresh perspectives on the news that affects the everyday lives of women and men. These articles are integrated into various media sources and are uploaded onto the GMDC website for online viewing.

This month we provide an opportunity for editors to access exclusive commentary on news and current events around the theme of Women’s Month in South African. For more information or to commission an article, please contact Danny Glenwright: editor@genderlinks.org.za
