August marks the sixtieth anniversary of the march by 20 000 women against the pass laws in South Africa on 9 August 1956. August is celebrated in in South Africa and in many neighbouring countries as Women’s Month. The month also serves to remind the people of South Africa and the region that the struggle for women’s freedom, justice and equality continues all over the world. On 3 August South Africans held local elections that serve as a useful measure of the depths of democracy with regard to women’s representation and participation.
