This August, Gender Links (GL) joins South Africa in commemorating Women’s Month under the theme “100 years of Albertina Sisulu. Woman of Fortitude: Women United in moving South Africa forward’
This Women’s Month comes against the backdrop of strengthened calls for ending all forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV). On 1 August united under the banner Total Shut Down thousands of women marched in different parts of the country denouncing the continued prevalence of GBV.
This month also commemorates the 10th anniversary of the signing of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. The Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance will be launching the 2018 SADC Gender Barometer (and the #SheDecidesSouthernAfrica Campaign which measures progress made by governments in achieving gender equality in the SADC region. This will be followed by a regional Alliance meeting to take place in Johannesburg.
In addition, GL will partner with UN Women to convene a Gender and News Summit in Tanzania from 22-24 August to share good practices among stakeholders on gender and the media issues in Tanzania and the region.
August marks the sixty-second anniversary of the march by 20 000 women against the pass laws in South Africa on 9 August 1956. August is celebrated in South Africa and in many neighbouring countries as Women’s Month. The month also serves to remind the people of South Africa and the region that the struggle for women’s freedom, justice and equality continues all over the world.
