The Gender, elections and the media project seeks to highlight the gendered dimensions of elections as well as to empower citizens, especially women and civil society to engage critically with the media. Women politicians generally have a difficult relationship with the media. This project therefore seeks to bridge the gaps between these two groups by bringing them together to deliberate on the gendered nature of elections coverage.
The project forms part of a region-wide campaign to increase women’s political representation and participation in politics in line with the 2008 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Development that aims to achieve gender parity in all areas of decision-making by 2015. This project targets women politicians, the media and civil society in SADC countries in the run up to elections. The representation of women in parliament currently stands at 23.6% and 23% respectively. According to GL projections the region is set to go over 30% women’s representation in national and local government by 2016. Click here to read more.
