Gender Links, a Southern African NGO based in Johannesburg specialising in gender, media, women’s rights and governance, seeks to fill the following vacancy:

South Africa Gender Protocol Alliance Programme Officer
The incumbent will join the Alliance and Partnerships team and serve as a Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance Officer for South Africa. Gender Links provides the Secretariat to the regional Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance, a ‘network of networks’ that comprises 15 country networks and eight theme clusters across SADC.

Based in Johannesburg, the Programme Officer will be expected to develop a strategy and action plan to build and sustain the South Africa Alliance Network, identify champions and work with the national gender machinery towards the attainment of the 28 targets of the SADC Gender Protocol.

S/he should possess strong research and writing skills including an ability to document good practices that demonstrate implementation of policy and legal frameworks. Experience in monitoring and evaluation is essential.

Key performance areas

  • Coalition building
  • Developing and managing gender campaigns
  • Training and capacity building on women’s rights for both civil society and government departments
  • Monitoring and evaluation of South Africa’s progress towards attainment of gender equality, in particular the 28 targets of the SADC Gender Protocol.
  • Gender budgeting and costing policy implementation.
  • Research, writing and ability to produce high quality knowledge and IEC materials
  • Administration and budget control.
  • Any other tasks as may be deemed appropriate to this job.

Skills and requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in gender, social science or any related degree.
  • Minimum 5 years working experience preferably in a gender related field.
  • Knowledge of South Africa women’s rights sector.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • South African citizenship or permanent residence.
  • Knowledge of the SADC region.

The above post is for an initial period of two years.
