GL Opionon and Commentary Service Communication Department

November was a busy month for the Gender Links Communications department! Communications Manager Danny Glenwright travelled to Mozambique mid-month to help facilitate and inaugurate the new Gender Links Lusophone Opinion and Commentary Service. With the help of Mercedes Sayagues and Board Member Eduardo Namburete, more than 25 potential writers were trained in opinion writing.

The 16 Days of Activism also got underway and the Opinion and Commentary Service began putting out stories around the various themes of the campaign. The debate about the role media plays in perpetuating gender-based violence has been especially intense and an article was distributed criticising media for its role in homophobic violence in the region.

Finally, toward the end of the month the Communications Department welcomed its newest staff member, Mona Hakimi, who took up the role of programme assistant. Mona hit the ground running and wrote a great piece for the commentary service about the impact of “I” Stories in the traditional media. See it here
