As part of the gender, media and elections project, the department has been working with media monitors in Tanzania as the country held elections on 31 October. The aim of the project is to monitor media content of 14 media houses on how they have been covering women political candidates and reporting on the gender dimensions of elections. The monitoring exercise began in October and will run until the end of November. Media currently being monitored includes print, radio and television.
Notably, the media literacy project has now taken off and the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the National University of Science and Technology undertook one week training with 30 media students. In Limpopo, GL’s media department trained staff from 11 community media stations and nine lecturers from the Department of Media Studies. Part of the project in Limpopo will include the drafting of gender policies for community media stations. Lecturers will also identify gender entry points for the subject modules they teach.
