As part of the objective to expand MAP into Francophone countries, in July 2007 Gender Links went on an exploratory visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to determine the feasibility of the project in that country. After establishing partnerships with the women and media organisation, Union Nationale de Femmes Congolaise (UCOFEM), PANOS (Paris), the High Authority of the Media (HAM), media houses and journalists, Gender Links began planning to roll out policies. A baseline study on media coverage of HIV and AIDS and Gender was conducted between October and November 2007. The report was published in April 2008 and launched in July 2008 marking the beginning of the policy roll out process.
MAP started with a target of 17 media houses. The pace of implementation in the DRC has been phenomenal and to date all the 17 media houses have drafted and adopted their policies. Most of the these media houses officially launched their policies on 1 December 2008 as part of commemorations to mark World AIDS Day.
